The Dangers of Sugar and Sugar Sweetened Beverages

The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugar consumption to 9 teaspoons (36 grams) per day for most men and 6 teaspoons (25 grams) per day for most women and children over 2. However, the average adult gets about 17 teaspoons of sugar each day — almost double the limit for men and triple the limit for women! The numbers are even worse for children. American kids consume 19 teaspoons per day, equaling over 65 pounds of added sugar per year. In this segment of BURST tv, dental hygienist Micah reviews the systemic and oral effects of consuming too much sugar. she also talks about the leading source of added sugar consumption, and what we can do as a society and healthcare providers to address this issue.
