A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. They typically receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education after dental school. Often times the team at a general dental office can diagnose, prevent and treat periodontal disease and place implants as well. With the addition of new diagnostic and treatment technologies hitting the market on a regular basis, it possible that general dental staff are waiting a little longer to send a patient to a specialist, but when is the right time to refer?
